Celebrating the Erasmus Days (13th to 15th October) the Debate Club organized a debate for grade seven students. We as a club are convinced that entering the world of debating can be a truly life-changing experience, as debating does not only improve one’s English skills, which are essential for connecting with fellow EU-citizens, but participants also learn how to voice their opinions in a respectful manner. This process of learning how to argue respectfully is to be considered a crucial element of every democracy, since democracy is based on the public’s participation, on a regional-, state- or federal level as well as on EU-level. Having established the individual and societal benefits of debating, the question occurred: How can we enthuse seven graders with debating? We approached this issue by choosing a topic from the environment the students know best: Their everyday school life. Accordingly, the topic of the day was, whether students should be provided with tablets. In order to include all students, they could choose between one group debating in English and another one debating in German. Surprisingly the majority of students preferred debating in English despite being “only” in seventh grade. After having preparation time to come up with arguments, the students first gave short opening statements and presented their main points. During the following lively crossfire debate they raised countless questions, looked for weaknesses in their opponents’ line of argumentation and defended their own ideas vigorously. The debate was concluded by closing statements by both sides summarizing the (in their opinion) most important points. Even after the “official” debate had ended, some students continued discussing the topic of the proceeding digitalization in the education sector. We hope that the students will use their newly acquisitioned skills in order to become responsible, active and democratic EU-citizens.
